A Sidewalk Success Story:
From Damage To A Smooth Finish.
Philadelphia sidewalks take a beating. Between tree roots, weather changes, and years of wear, cracks and uneven slabs can quickly turn into tripping hazards and safety concerns. Logan Construction recently completed a full sidewalk replacement project that shows just how effective a professional approach can be.
Step 1: Identifying the Problem
The homeowner reached out after noticing raised and cracked concrete slabs along the sidewalk. Not only was it unsightly, but it was also a liability risk for anyone passing by.
Step 2: Careful Removal
Rather than a patch job, the Logan team fully removed the damaged sections. This step is crucial — it ensures that the new concrete isn’t laid over unstable ground.
Step 3: Setting the Foundation
Once cleared, we prepared the base for proper drainage and stability. Skipping this step often leads to future sinking or cracking, which is why Logan’s process prioritizes a solid foundation.
Step 4: Pouring & Finishing
The fresh concrete was poured, leveled, and finished with precision. The result? A clean, safe, and durable sidewalk that improves both curb appeal and safety.
Why This Matters for Homeowners
Replacing a sidewalk isn’t just about looks — it’s about long-term safety and compliance. In Philadelphia, property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks in front of their homes, and ignoring damage can lead to violations or fines.
Case Study: Chestnut Hill
"As the HOA president representing 64 homeowners, it is our duty to receive a number of bids before deciding on a contractor.
After the snow and ice storms of the winters of 2024 and 2025 our sidewalks in the common area began showing signs of aging and deterioration. The harsh salt treatments in the winter, along with lawn mowers driving over the paths in the summer, had some squares down to rubble. To add insult to injury, rocks would often cracks home windows when the weed wackers were deployed. We couldn't wait, so we called Logan for an estimate. They jumped at the opportunity to work with this again, having remediated a "floating" stucco wall earlier this year.
We knew we had a number of issues, some urgent, some cosmetic that needed a comprehensive course of action, preferably one that could break the project down into phases. This makes the Board's task of approving repairs, replacements, and improvements more manageable while sticking to our strict operational budget.
Logan made sure to keep in contact throughout the process and came in as super affordable. The Board's vote was unanimous and the contract was signed.
We did not want a conflict with our weekly contracted landscaping work, so after careful coordination and a long range weather report, the dates were set.
We notified the community of the workdates and requested that work start later in the morning, careful not to disturb the peace and serenity of our neighborhood. George and his team were more than happy to accomodate our requests.
Logan Construction replaced 10 of the most severely damaged squares, making safety a priority with caution tape and cones. Once the cement dried and the framing was removed, we were happy that our favorite walkway on our sprawling east lawn, a favorite for morning walks and conversation, has been restored."
One important note: We were offered expert color and style matching but the community has had so many repairs and replacements over the years, we couldn't justify the added expense, given that we have many more phases to tackle.
